today I will write a bit of an unusual post, but I think it’s highly relevant in this era.
Maybe you have an online dating profile or maybe you are searching for flats online.
Trust me catfishing is a term that can be used pretty broadly.
For all if you who don’t know what catfishing is – basically a person pretending to be someone else and louring other people in for dates or to scam them out of, well, their money.
Ok, fair enough, the correct term used for scamming a person out of their money is called phishing, but I will use catfishing for both, ok?
BEWARE TINDER & CO.
It happened to me thrice hahha, but because of recent events, I thought this is the right time to write about it!
When I first downloaded Tinder in Australia, you know, connecting with some cute Aussies, I immediately chatted with one guy in Melbourne.
Fair enough, he was pretty decent looking, honestly the kind if ‘too good-looking’, but I was winging it.
We texted and then we scheduled to meet up.
I was talking about going out for a glass of wine, he simply invited me to drink at his place.
And, my gut wrenched, this doesn’t feel good!
I tried to defer the situation to meeting in public first.
But he didn’t budge.
He also kind of got a demanding and aggressive tone (just the feeling I got from the sentences he used) and then I was like, ok, suit yourself.
What I did next is a super smart move –
Girls, and dudes, of course.
REVERSE IMAGE SEARCH
I took a screenshot of his pictures and went to a reverse image search platform. There are multiple free ones and if you are in a desktop, the easiest thing to do would be to go on google images, click the camera and drop your picture there.
But as I was on the phone I just googled reverse image search and uploaded it.
Aaaaand, found an Instagram profile with the pictures of a Peruvian Model haha.
I went through his profile, turns out he’s pretty known in the US and South America, has a totally different name and a girlfriend.
Poor guy, this must happen quite often.
Anyways, immediately went to Tinder and reported the profile.
And that people is why I don’t use superlikes anymore and associate them with..
You would probably now think – ahh Nirina is smart, this situation won’t happen again.
Oh no, it did. At least twice after that.
Recently even a bit more extreme as I texted that person for at least a few days, exchanging a bit too intimate details.
Note: If a guy starts the conversation off weird, don’t message him back.
It’s a learning curve for sure haha.
Anyways turns out, a friend if mine also texted with him and the stories matched, but seeing the pictures on another profile with the same name and a totally different dude, oh man, I felt so stupid in that moment.
On this note, thank you universe for protecting me, because I definitely don’t want to imagine what would have happened meeting this person.
And I still wonder who I texted with, but whatever, I didn’t do anything super stupid like sending nudes.
Please, never send intimate pictures of yourself!!!
Only ones that are open to the public anyways aka. the ones on your social media profiles.
But let’s look at…
CATFISHING IN REAL ESTATE
You know by now, I plan on moving out and am currently looking for flats.
I found my dream flat….so I thought!
Honestly sometimes I’m still oblivious to the signs of my intuition, because my first instinct was: This is too good to be true!
But anyways, inquired an appointment to visit the apartment.
I ended up emailing with the “owner” who told me what turns out to be a sob story to get me spend money fast.
Until that point it was all decent info.
She hasn’t found a new renter as she had to go back home, because of personal reasons, but would fly back in to show the flat.
I was like sweet, told her a bit about myself, oh, since she has my website link, if you’re reading this, there are other ways to earn money, you know.
Anyways the next email was about using airbnb as a transaction service and paying upfront to see the flat.
This is where my mind geared into: ok, this is clearly a scam-mode.
So, I did what I always do, call my dad, tell him and do the smart girl move –
Remember from before?
Yes, reverse image search.
And there it is, the proof, this wonderful flat exists, in Madrid, Spain and can be rented through booking.com.
Needless to say, I didn’t reply back!
I still have my money, a little less of my pride, but, at least, a further learning experience.
I hear you screaming:
“Nirina, how could you have been so naive?”
Well, I believe in the law if attraction, I believe I can have my dream flat with lower price tag than what would be expected and the flat was like a spitting image of the one I have on my vision board.
Also, I do believe in the good in people.
Which is exactly why I couldn’t get spammed for real.
Karma works itself out. Always.
I do good, I get good.
Simple as that.
As a guide for you to spot potential scammers in real estate:
- Name of the person that e-mails you isn’t the same as the ad.
- Broken language.
- Sob story.
- Being overseas or not present.
- Wanting money in any kind of way BEFORE even seeing the flat.
- Using third party services for payment.
- Weird email address.
- Just plainly a super unrealistic ad.
- Too professional looking pictures.
And always do the smart girl move –
REVERSE IMAGE SEARCH
The internet attracts all kinds of people, under them scammers who love to catfish people.
Just remind me of the show where people actually meet their catfish, urgh.
Whichever platforms you use, please be safe.
That covers Instagram, Facebook, eBay, Tinder, Couchsurfing and even real estate websites.
Of course also be aware of phishing mails from “paypal” etc.
Always check the senders email address!
Be careful what kind of info you share and especially also pictures.
The internet is a wonderful place to connect with like-minded people a lot can’t do in real life.
I still see the best of opportunities in it.
And as I concentrate on that, by the law, I get the best out of it.
As for my flat, the one was beautiful, but there’s one even better for me.
I trust in that.
